Awake Windows

As babies are constantly growing and developing, keeping up with naps and awake windows can feel incredibly challenging. Just when you feel like you’ve found your rhythm, things seem to change again. As a sleep consultant, it has really opened my eyes to how important staying consistent with age-appropriate awake windows can be when it comes to improving your child’s overall sleep — even through these ever-changing stages.

Awake windows naturally shift as your baby grows, which can make them feel hard to keep up with. However, following them as a gentle guide can help bring more predictability to your day and support more settled sleep. When awake windows are well balanced, your child is more likely to feel ready for sleep rather than overtired or unsettled.

One of the biggest reasons awake windows matter is ensuring your child is getting enough sleep throughout the day, while also avoiding too much day sleep so there is enough sleep pressure built for night sleep. They also play a key role in preventing overtiredness before naps, which can make settling feel almost impossible due to overstimulation. At the same time, appropriate awake windows help avoid your child being undertired, which can also lead to resistance and shorter naps. Finding that balance can make a noticeable difference to both day and night sleep.

Finding this balance doesn’t have to be perfect — small, consistent adjustments can go a long way. When awake windows are supported in a calm and flexible way, sleep often begins to feel more manageable for both you and your child.

And that’s where I can help. If you’re currently struggling with inconsistent naps, frequent night wakings, or finding it hard to settle or resettle your child, you don’t have to navigate it alone. You can click the link below to learn more about the sleep support programs I offer.
